Let’s talk Resolutions!!
Friday Jan 05, 2024
Friday Jan 05, 2024
Since it is the beginning of a new year, let’s talk about resolutions.
A Resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something.
Forbes did a study in Oct 2023 (so last year): most common resolutions
* Improve fitness
*Improve finances
*Improve mental health
*Lose weight
*Improve diet
failing at New Year’s resolutions is so common that there’s even a slew of (unofficial) dates commemorating such failures—some sources cite “Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day” as January 17 while others denote the second Friday in January as “Quitter’s Day.”
Goal is the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result
SMART Goals
Specific
Specific goals have a desired outcome that is clearly understood. This might be a sales number or a product rollout goal. No matter what it is, the goal should be clearly articulated so that everyone is on the same page with the objective. Define what will be accomplished and the actions to be taken to accomplish the goal.
Measurable
These are the numbers used with the goal. You need to have a quantifiable objective so that you can track progress. Define what data will be used to measure the goal and set a method for collection.
Achievable
Goals need to be realistic in order to maintain the enthusiasm to try to achieve them. Setting lofty goals is good, but you may want to break them down into smaller, bite-sized chunks. If the goal is not doable, you may need to first ramp up resources to give yourself a shot at success. Ramping up resources would likely be its own S.M.A.R.T. goal.
Relevant
Goals should be aligned with the mission of the company. Don’t set goals just as an exercise for something to do. One way to determine if the goal is relevant is to define the key benefit to the organization.
Time-Bound
Goals should have a deadline. A goal without a deadline doesn’t do much. How can you identify success or failure? This is why S.M.A.R.T. goals set a final date. This doesn’t mean that all the work is done, but it means that you can evaluate the success of the endeavor and set new goals.
DUMB Goals
Dream-Driven:
This aspect means that these goals are mainly influenced and powered by your dreams and passions. DUMB goals are typically a result of dreaming big and being confident in your exciting and challenging ambitions.
Uplifting:
These goals inspire you to be excited about achieving your objectives. The positive feelings help give you purpose and drive to fulfill your desires. These goals primarily focus on how fantastic the future can be once you’ve attained your goals.
Method Friendly:
DUMB goals rely on plans and practices that serve as the roadmap to realizing your ambitions. For instance, having the proper knowledge of accessing and using financial services can help you achieve your financial goals. You create habits around working towards your goal.
Behavior Driven:
This characteristic means that these goals are intertwined with methods/processes that are habitual or part of your behavior. Therefore, you begin treating your goals as habits until they become one. In this way, your habitual behavior becomes the driving force behind your dreams.
Mission is the vocation or calling.
Purpose is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists
